The History of Acton Town Hall at 19 Willow Street North

The Acton Town Hall, located at 19 Willow Street North in Acton, Ontario, is one of the town’s most iconic landmarks. Built in 1882–1883, this red-brick building stands as a proud example of Victorian Italianate architecture and has long been a centerpiece of community life in Acton.

When it first opened, the Acton Town Hall housed much more than a council chamber. Inside were the mayor’s office, clerk’s office, fire department, town constable, and even two jail cells. For decades, this historic space served as the heartbeat of Acton, where governance, safety, and community all came together under one roof.

Acton Town Hall’s Heritage and Transformation

In the 1980s, after the municipal offices relocated, the Acton Town Hall was repurposed to house local social service agencies. One jail cell was cleverly converted into a small kitchen, while the other was preserved as a reminder of the building’s unique past. Recognizing its cultural importance, the Town of Halton Hills designated the Acton Town Hall as a heritage property under the Ontario Heritage Act in the late 1980s.

By the early 2000s, restoration projects began to bring back the grandeur of Acton’s historic Town Hall. In 2010, the upper-floor auditorium was restored and reopened as Willow Hall, a beautiful gathering place for community events. Soon after, in 2013, the building saw the creation of Citizens Hall with a mezzanine and heritage elevator, ensuring accessibility for all visitors while maintaining its historic charm.

Acton Town Hall Today

Today, the Acton Town Hall—known as the Acton Town Hall Centre—is lovingly maintained by Heritage Acton, a volunteer non-profit organization. It now serves as a community hub for weddings, special events, art shows, and celebrations, blending history with modern functionality. The restoration has preserved the 1883 character of Acton’s Town Hall, while continuing to make it a vibrant part of daily life in Acton.
